Thursday 7th September - The shepherds way of life
This was a day of rest, since it was clagged in and howling. Still, we managed a fair amount of walking after hitching across the border to Pierre St Martin for lunch. What a strange place this huge ski-complex with machines and workmen everywhere, building, repairing and all packing into one open restaurant amongst an indoor street of closed shop fronts. And still the musak played down the empty corridors.
We got a lift with two French shepherds who effectively enlightened us into the modern shepherd's way of life. You drive from one bar to the next keeping an eye on your flock along the way from the window of the car. Even the road workers (at least they drove a big yellow truck) tucked into a full breakfast including a bottle of wine, and some patxaran which is sloe berries, coffee beans and a cinnamon pod soaked in anisette, oh and a brandy chaser. We walked half way back again, having obviously failed to find any of the things that we were looking for (like batteries for my camera which I'm now carrying around like a dead weight), but got a lift about half way. Then drank beer, played chess, ate dinner and generally had too much to drink. But the forecast is looking increasingly positive.
